BELOWNEON

A home for the people the city threw out.

The city builds up. You build down. Juno hands you the code to a flood level sealed forty years ago, right under her noodle stand. Keep it running: power, food, water, beds.

Under the street · −16 m

Sealed forty years ago. Still wired to the old grid.

A corporation is clearing the lower blocks for its new arcology, and the people who lived there have nowhere to go. Juno knows a way down.

Juno

I'm Juno. I sell noodles, and I know people. And I know what's under my stand.

A flood level, sealed forty years ago. Dry. Forgotten. Still wired to the old grid.

I've got the access code. What I don't have is someone to run it.

A frame of Juno's story: the lower street at night under a soda billboard, with Juno's line about the eviction notices
Juno's story, the voiced intro of every new game.

The Undercroft · −40 m

Code's good. Welcome to the Undercroft, keeper.

Dig floors under the shaft, build rooms side by side and fill the beds. Every room makes one batch, then waits for your tap.

Juno

When a batch is ready, tap the room. Nobody else will.
A cut through the shelter under the street: four floors of lit rooms, with residents at work in a reactor, vat farms, a chrome clinic, a workshop and a broadcast room

A shelter four floors down. Rooms side by side merge into doubles and triples, and show 2, 4 or 6 people at work.

The rooms

Quarters

How it plays · −44 m

Short sessions. A long way down.

Check in, collect, build, put people to work. Rooms finish their batch while you are away, and wait for you.

  • Tap when it's ready

Every room makes one batch of power, food or water, and pays credits when you collect it. Then it starts the next.

  • Build down

Dig new floors under the shaft. Rooms built side by side merge into doubles and triples.

  • Train your people

Skills grow only in the workshop, the chrome clinic and the chem lab. Work earns experience and levels.

  • Keep the lights on

Each shortage hurts in its own way. Hungry workers slow to half speed, and with the power store empty the rooms farthest from the reactors go dark.

  • Grow the shelter

People walk in off the street until the shelter has 20. After that the broadcast room brings recruits, with better stats than walk-ins.

  • Nothing to fight

No villains on screen and no combat. The city is hard on people; the shelter is where things work.

The game as played: the resource bar along the top, Juno on comms at the bottom left and the Build button at the bottom right, over lit rooms
In play: the resources along the top, Juno on comms, and Build.

From the shelter · −47 m

Lit rooms under a dark city.

Six residents training in a chrome clinic around a holographic body scan, quarters above and a workshop below
The chrome clinic trains biotech, six residents at a time.
A triple reactor with its workers, a vat farm above and another below
A triple reactor: six workers, power for every room.
The street at night over the shelter, a soda billboard and neon signs above the first rooms
Street level. The shelter starts under it.

Quarters · −51 m

Some walk in with a name.

Most residents come in off the street. Five arrive with the story, better than any recruit, and show you what training is for.

Fixer · the noodle stand over the entrance
